What is Job- shadowing?
Job-shadowing is an opportunity for you to connect or “shadow” with a business professional (job- shadowing mentor) who has specific knowledge about an occupation or career in which you are interested. You observe responsibilities and tasks associated with the mentor’s career and have the opportunity to ask questions about the knowledge, skills, talents, and level of education required for the job. While the purpose of job shadowing is to gather career related information and expand your networking contacts, it also allows you to build interviewing skills, become aware of trends in the field and see workforce technologies in action. Multiple job- shadowing experiences may be arranged to allow you to explore a variety of career paths.

Some Helpful Tips to Follow.
• Know what you want to accomplish. The primary objective of job- shadowing is to investigate a specific career field so you can make a more informed career decision.
• Prepare for your job-shadowing experience. Plan what you want to discuss with your job shadowing mentor. Come prepared with specific questions.
• Days of job shadowing. Remember that this is a professional experience. You do not need to wear “interview apparel” however, you should dress appropriately; “business casual.”

In April 2012, I have visited a school for students with
special needs, as part of a Comenius in-service training
program. I am completely satisfied by this job-shadowing
activity, which was organized by Interprimair, as well as
with all the previous communication with the agency that
led to this placement. First of all, the job-shadowing
placement was in accordance to my professional needs and
interests, since it was in a special school of high standards.
Also, all the information given by the school was insightful
and very useful, whereas the organization of the activities
was flexible and could easily be modified to fit my interests
and needs. The communication and sharing of views on
education with the personnel of the school, as well as with
the colleagues from Sweden, was meaningful and
constructive. In all, as a result from this visit I have been
acquainted with another country's educational system and
the provision of special education in it, and I have enriched
my knowledge and experience with elements that can be
transferred and implemented to my educational practice.
In other words, I consider that my goals and my objectives
for this educational program have been reached and the
job-shadowing has been an overall pleasant and
meaningful experience for me.
